Plastic-Covered Greenhouses
Plastic-covered greenhouses are common among commercial growers due to their economic advantages, the ease of its relocation and the fact that they can be immediately used for production. Home gardeners can also take advantage of the benefits enjoyed by commercial growers, particularly if they will be using the greenhouse for a certain season to grow a vegetable or fruit that is best grown during that season.
Quonset style greenhouses are the most typical plastic-covered greenhouses. They are made from a single layer of plastic film that can be left unattended for the most part of the year. The ease of building one and it being inexpensive are what makes it recommended for basic greenhouse garden owners. This kind of plastic-covered greenhouse requires a small heating system to keep the plants heated, but the use of kerosene heaters are not advised in this type, as the fumes it produces can easily kill the plants.
Plastic materials used are further classified into two main types – polycarbonate panels and polyethylene covers. Polycarbonate panels are commonly used in bulletproof windows, compact discs and eyeglass lenses due to it not being easily breakable. It is the preferred cover material for greenhouses as it imitates the glass, which would allow more sunlight to enter the greenhouse. Using polyethylene covers would allow them to easily configure their greenhouse so that it can adapt to the changes outside. Polyethylene covers are light in nature so it is recommended to have something that can clinch the material to the frame.
In choosing to go plastic for your greenhouse cover, the gardener must consider the way he will be using the greenhouse. If he is to use it only for a certain period during the year, it is recommended that he invest in polyethylene covers that remain usable even if they are left unattended for a long time.
